MX Keys Bluetooth not working — Complete troubleshooting guide

Unstable or impossible MX Keys Bluetooth connection? Full diagnostic: pairing, Logi Bolt, drivers, and fixes when the radio module is faulty.

An MX Keys that no longer connects via Bluetooth is one of the most frustrating issues: the keyboard visually works but no keystrokes reach the computer. In 80% of cases it is software (re-pairing needed, corrupted Logi Options+ driver, conflict with another receiver). In 20% it is hardware (faulty radio module on the motherboard). Before replacing anything, follow this 5-step protocol.

Diagnostic

Typical symptoms: (1) the keyboard is listed in Bluetooth devices but doesn't type; (2) connection toggles between the 3 Easy-Switch slots without staying stable; (3) types correctly via USB-C wired but not wireless; (4) works on one device but not another. Case 3 = radio module issue. Cases 1 and 2 = re-pair needed. Case 4 = OS driver conflict.

Méthode

  1. 1

Plug in via USB-C to confirm the keyboard itself works. If yes, radio problem. If no, deeper hardware issue.

  2. 2

On the tablet/PC, remove the keyboard from Bluetooth devices then re-pair. Hold the 1/2/3 key on the keyboard for 3 seconds until rapid blink.

  3. 3

If using a Logi Bolt or Unifying receiver, re-pair via Logi Options+: Options+ → Add Device → Bolt Receiver → Pair.

  4. 4

Update Logi Options+ and keyboard firmware (Options+ → Settings → Update).

  5. 5

If nothing works, the MX Keys motherboard probably needs replacing (€15). Contact us for workshop diagnosis.

FAQ

What's the difference between Bluetooth and Logi Bolt on MX Keys?

Bluetooth is the standard protocol, works with any device. Logi Bolt is Logitech's proprietary USB receiver, more secure (end-to-end encryption) and stable in office environments. On MX Keys you can use both simultaneously (one device on Bolt, two on Bluetooth).

Is the Logi Bolt receiver replaceable?

Yes, Logitech sells it separately (~€15) or included with another MX Keys Logi Bolt keyboard. You can re-pair your current MX Keys to a new receiver via Logi Options+.

Does my MX Keys S have Logi Bolt or Unifying?

The MX Keys S (2024) uses Logi Bolt exclusively. The 2019 MX Keys uses Logi Unifying. The two protocols are incompatible between receivers — check the logo on the receiver (B for Bolt, orange asterisk for Unifying).

My 3 Easy-Switch slots toggle on their own — why?

Typical software conflict: another device in range (smartphone, tablet) tries to reconnect Bluetooth in the background and captures the slot. Fix: forget the keyboard on unused devices. Or enable 'pair only when key held' in Logi Options+.

80% of MX Keys Bluetooth issues are solved by re-pairing + updating Logi Options+. If the radio connection stays faulty after those steps, a €15 motherboard is the only hardware fix.
